Daniel started teaching at Runyon in 2005 and has been a student since its beginnings. He has two teaching certificates from his studies in Mysore, India and teaches Vinyasa Yoga (with roots in Ashtanga). Daniel’s teaching is laced with a sense of humor and a down-to-earth attitude which makes yoga accessible to anyone willing to show up for the gig. “You’re living your dream… don’t miss it.”

Siri Khalsa

Siri teaches Kundalini Yoga and Meditation, Hatha Yoga, and Wholistic Living. He was raised in a spiritual yogic community and brings this life long knowledge to his Runyon Canyon FREE yoga classes.

Kamala Mathis

Kamala has been teaching at Runyon since 2003. Kamala’s loving heart, intuitive spirit, and healing abilities have drawn people to her since she was a child. She began practicing yoga in the mid 90′s to relieve stress and migraines, and rapidly began to notice the healing benefits of yoga. It made such a dramatic impact in her own life; she realized her calling to share these gifts with others. Kamala received her teacher certification at the White Lotus Foundation in Santa Barbara.

Practicing:
Yoga has been one of the greatest gifts in this life for Donna. Every time she steps to the yoga mat, new challenges arise which helps her learn so much about herself. Yoga is her alone time and it has become a huge tool for her to be able to remain open, loving, peaceful and balanced.

Teaching:
Donna feels very present when she teaches yoga. She looks at the students in her classes and sees them learning, which is just thrilling. Donna loves sharing yoga and the fact that she gets to teach outdoors at Runyon with no ceilings or walls in nature, well, she couldn’t have dreamt up a better place to spend so much of this life. She is so grateful, after being given this gift for so many years, to be able to give back to this beautiful community. It’s the best feeling when students come up after class and say “that is exactly what I needed”. Donna’s heart literally melts with joy.

Breathing Exercises

Here are 5 different types of breathing exercises to help you: slow down, relax, detox and activate your core (not a core workout but you will feel your belly working). After doing these five breathing exercises you will feel invigorated and ready to handle anything.

  1. Take a deep breath in through your nose (make sure your mouth is closed), hold the breath for a moment, and then take 10 seconds (that’s the goal!) to exhale through your mouth. Repeat this 5x’s. You should feel the beginning of your exhalation (counts 1,2,3) up at the top of your torso, towards the middle of the exhalation (counts 4,5,6) traveling down your torso, and by the end of your exhalation (counts 8,9,10) you should feel your lower abdominal (transverse abdominal–which is the most difficult to activate!).
  2. Breath work for the Pilates 100. Inhale through your nose for 5 seconds–keeping your mouth closed, then, exhale through your mouth for 5 seconds. The inhalation should sound like a sniff. These are percussive breaths, forcing you to engage the abdominals. The exhalation should sound like “shh, shh, shh, shh, shh,” Repeat 10x’s
  3. Repeat the breath work for the Hundred but instead of a percussive breath, switch to a smooth breath. Inhale through the nose for 5 seconds, exhale through the mouth for 5 seconds.
  4. Now close your mouth. Inhale through your nose for 5 seconds, and exhale through your nose for 5 seconds. Remember to keep your mouth closed. Repeat 10x’s.
  5. For our last exercise, move the breath from your nose to the back of your throat. Your mouth stays closed, you might feel a tickle in the back of your throat, and your body will create a sound similar to an ocean wave. Welcome to Ujjayi breathing! Ujjayi breathing is a diaphragmatic breath, it helps with detox and will leave you feeling centered and at peace.

By this point you should be feeling relaxed!
