Consider these eight people when making your reference list:Recent bosses. Co-workers. Professors. Friends but only if they’re a professional reference. Group members. Any place you’ve volunteered. The person you babysat for or whose lawn you mowed every summer. High school teacher or coach you still talk to regularly.
How long after reference check is offer?
Checking references is definitely the final FINAL step to hiring. Typically, they’ll extend an offer to you 1 to 3 business days AFTER your “last” reference has been checked. So, if all of your references were contacted Friday, then if they wish to hire you, they’d definitely extend an offer to you by Wednesday.

Are reference checks legal?
In addition to Privacy Act, employers need to be aware of their legal obligation to provide a duty of care when providing or acquiring a reference check. Employers have a duty of care under common law to the former employee that the information in the reference provided is correct and fair.
