The Pet Address search engine allows you to search for the microchip number of a pet in various animal databases. Simply type the microchip number in the search field; then click to search. If your number is found in one of the databases you will be directed to the database for further information.
How do I find my microchip details?
The microchip number is stored digitally within the microchip that has been implanted in the animal. If someone uses a microchip scanner to scan the animal then the microchip number will be displayed. Vets, Welfare Organisations, Dog Wardens and many others will have access to a microchip scanner.
Where to check if a dog is chipped?
Call a local veterinary office, rescue group or animal shelter and ask if it has a universal microchip scanner. Not all microchip scanners are created equally. Some scanners will identify only certain brands of microchips, whereas universal scanners are able to recognize microchips from multiple manufacturers.
Can a vet change microchip details?
Changing your details at your vet will not change your microchip details, as these are held by a separate company. This is the same if you rehome an animal which is already microchipped.

If you find a lost or stray cat, the first thing to do is to take the cat to a vet or any Petsmart with a Banfield inside to have it scanned for a microchip (they will do this free of charge). This is usually a rescue, vet’s office, or animal control facility that may have the owner’s information.

If you have recently bought a pet and want to change the name, you can do this once you have accepted the transfer and the pet is in your account. Just click ‘Edit Pet Details’, update the name and click ‘Save’. Updating the pet’s name is free of charge once you have paid the transfer fee.
Can you read dog chip with phone?
Unfortunately, no. A smart phone can not and will not ever be able to read a pet’s microchip. There are no apps for iphone or android that do this and there never will be. There will never be an iphone, android- google, samsung or otherwise that will ever have that capability.

You can register your information for free at 24PetWatch. It says you have to pay them but you can get through the flow if you don’t pay them. Most microchip makers like HomeAway and AKCPetReunite (and there are about 100 of them) say you have to pay them to register.
What should I do if my dog has a microchip?
The facility (vet or shelter) that placed the microchip in your pet should have registered the number to themselves, or even to you. They should also give you paperwork that sends you to the company that created the microchip to register your information and keep it up to date. This is where it gets annoying.
