Can you visit telescopes?
Visitors can tour the observatory by day, or head back after sundown, when they can get a look at the night sky through two dedicated visitor telescopes. Unfortunately, though, visitors can’t have access to the research telescopes at night—the lights from their cars would block the view.
Are there any observatories open to the public?
Many observatories around the world are at least partially accessible to the public, with some, such as McDonald Observatory in West Texas, even allowing regular public access to some of their research telescopes.

Many facilities offer tours and some give peeks through a telescope on public nights. Among the best-known public facilities is Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, where visitors can look at the Sun during the day and look through a professional scope at night.

When we look to the edge, we see a spiral arm of the Milky Way known as the Orion-Cygnus Arm (or the Orion spur): a river of light across the sky that gave rise to so many ancient myths. The solar system is just on the inner edge of this spiral arm.

When is the McDonald Observatory open for visitors?
Inside, exhibits explain what astronomers do at the observatory. The Visitors Center also includes a theater, gift shop, and cafe. The Visitors Center is open 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. everyday except Thanksgiving, Christmas, & New Year’s Days.
When is the Keck Observatory open to the public?
Our volunteers are available Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to greet guests and educate them about Keck Observatory and the other Maunakea observatories. Visitors can view models and images of the twin 10-meter Keck Observatory telescopes as well as hear about our latest discoveries and outreach programs.
How big is the telescope at Lick Observatory?
After talks by two research astronomers and a presentation on the history of Lick Observatory, visitors look through the 36-inch Great Lick Refractor and the 40-inch Nickel Telescope. Concert and a talk by a research astronomer is followed by viewing through the 36-inch Great Lick Refractor and, conditions permitting, the 40-inch Nickel Telescope.
